                             Health and Wellbeing Public Health Intern Department/Program: Health and Wellbeing Reports To: Director of Health and Wellbeing / Designated Preceptor Location: Washington, DC FLSA Status: Internship / Academic Field Placement EEO Classification: Intern / Student Placement Supervisor: No Job Function: Public Health Internship - Onsite Revision Date: August 2026 Overview The Health and Wellbeing Public Health Intern supports the planning, implementation, evaluation, and coordination of health and wellness initiatives serving women experiencing homelessness, housing instability, and other barriers to health and wellbeing. Working alongside the Health and Wellbeing team, the intern will gain hands-on experience applying public health principles in a community-based human services setting, with emphasis on health education, health literacy, social determinants of health, program development, community engagement, data collection, program evaluation, and health equity. Key Role Responsibilities • Support health and wellness programming, outreach, workshops, screenings, and special events across N Street Village programs. • Develop client-friendly health education materials related to nutrition, preventive health, chronic disease management, sexual and reproductive health, healthy aging, and other identified community health needs. • Apply health literacy principles to help ensure health information is understandable, accessible, and actionable for clients. • Support initiatives addressing social determinants of health, including access to healthcare, nutritious food, benefits, education, employment resources, and community supports. • Assist with community health needs assessments, surveys, questionnaires, and other data-collection activities. • Enter, organize, and analyze program participation, referral, and outcome data to support program evaluation and quality improvement. • Assist with identifying trends, barriers to participation, and opportunities to strengthen client engagement in health and wellness services. • Research community resources and maintain accurate referral and resource information. • Support coordination with healthcare providers, universities, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, volunteers, and community partners. • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, community events, interdisciplinary activities, and professional development opportunities. • Complete an internship project that addresses an identified departmental or community health need. • Apply public health theory and principles within a community-based organization. • Demonstrate understanding of trauma-informed, strengths-based, person-centered, and culturally responsive approaches to community health. • Develop experience in public health program planning, implementation, evaluation, and communication. • Identify barriers to healthcare access and strategies for improving engagement among underserved populations. • Demonstrate professional communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical conduct, and respect for client autonomy. Organizational Responsibilities • Collaborate respectfully with staff, volunteers, healthcare providers, and partner agencies to support coordinated services for women. • Maintain client confidentiality, professional boundaries, and compliance with N Street Village policies and applicable privacy requirements. • Participate in regular supervision with the designated preceptor and incorporate feedback into professional development and internship activities. • Support the mission, values, health equity goals, and client-centered service approach of N Street Village. The Health and Wellbeing Public Health Intern may be assigned additional public-health-related projects or responsibilities by the Director of Health and Wellbeing or designated preceptor based on departmental priorities, client needs, academic requirements, and the intern’s learning goals. Assignments will be appropriate to the intern role and completed with appropriate supervision. Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications Minimum Qualifications · Current undergraduate student pursuing Public Health, Community Health, Health Education, Health Promotion, or a closely related field. · Interest in community health, health equity, and working with underserved populations. · Strong written and verbal communication, organization, time-management, and interpersonal skills. · Ability to work respectfully with individuals experiencing homelessness, trauma, behavioral health challenges, chronic health conditions, and housing instability. · Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and willingness to learn data collection and program tracking systems. · Ability to maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, cultural humility, and appropriate ethical conduct. Preferred Qualifications · Coursework or experience related to social determinants of health, health disparities, health education, research methods, epidemiology, or program evaluation. · Experience with Excel, surveys, data collection, basic data analysis, community outreach, or health education. · Previous volunteer, internship, academic, or work experience in a nonprofit, healthcare, community-based, or human services setting is a plus. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements This internship may involve a combination of office-based work, client-facing activities, community events, and movement between N Street Village program spaces. The intern should be able to sit, stand, walk, and participate in routine program setup and activities, with reasonable accommodations as applicable. The environment serves women experiencing homelessness, trauma, behavioral health challenges, chronic health conditions, and housing instability and may involve exposure to communicable illnesses or high-needs situations. The intern is expected to follow agency safety, confidentiality, infection-prevention, and emergency procedures and to seek staff support when situations exceed the scope of the internship role.
