About Us: DMEA's service territory is in Southwest Colorado, and we serve approximately 37,000 meters and 30,000 members. We provide affordable, reliable, and safe electric service to members living and working in Montrose and Delta counties. We also provide electric service to a small portion of Gunnison County. Apprentice Lineman - Montrose Compensation: The wage for this full-time non-exempt position $44.96 per hour. This position is unionized and requires the candidates to join the applicable union upon hire. Job Summary: The Apprentice Lineman assists in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems. This position is part of a formal apprenticeship program leading to a Journeyman certification. The apprenticeship is governed by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee and subject to the Apprenticeship Agreement. The Apprentice Lineman is expected to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience required to advance through the program levels through on-the-job training and coursework. The position requires frequent daytime travel and on-call response throughout the service territory for construction inspections, installation services, and outage restoration. This position is unionized and requires candidates to be willing to join the applicable union upon hire. Education & Experience: High School diploma or GED equivalent. Actively enrolled in or a recent graduate from an accredited Electric Line Worker program. Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn safe and effective linework practices. Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in all types of weather conditions. Physically capable of performing linework duties, including climbing poles, lifting heavy materials, and working in varying weather conditions. Qualifications & Licenses/Certifications: Must reside within a 30-minute radius of the cooperative's service area. This position is subject to non-standard working hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call when required. Must possess valid First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months from the date of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid Class A CDL or the ability to obtain within six (6) months from the date of hire. Essential Job Functions: Receives on-the-job training from Journeyman Linemen, Line Foremen, and/or other line crew personnel to learn and accomplish the essential functions of the Journeyman Lineman position. Learns to perform the essential functions of the Journeyman Lineman position through completing required training as directed by the Joint Apprentice Committee. Apprenticeship performance is evaluated by the Joint Apprentice Committee to ensure timely and satisfactory progress in the program. Respond to emergency outages and storm restoration, often working extended hours in adverse conditions. Aid in restoration efforts, including trimming trees around transmission and distribution lines, and assist with fiber installation and maintenance. Re-fuses distribution lines and transformers and assists with installation of transformers, meters and other electrical equipment. Communicate effectively with members and team members regarding work progress, outages, or service concerns. Climb poles and work at heights using approved safety gear and fall protection equipment. Essential Physical and Mental Requirements: Thirty percent (30%) of the time is spent standing, thirty percent (30%) sitting, and forty percent (40%) walking. Frequently lift and carry 50lbs and occasionally lift 100lbs. May push and/or pull approximately 150 lbs. Must be able to climb poles and/or ladders frequently, which requires the ability to maintain balance on rough or uneven terrain. Occasionally, must stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Reaching and handling are done frequently. Finger dexterity and the ability to feel are occasionally necessary while constructing or repairing lines and equipment. Talking in order to exchange ideas over a two-way radio, phone, and communicate with other employees, contractors and customers, both in office and outdoors settings, is done frequently. Constantly required to hear radio transmissions. Must also be able to hear faint arcing sounds or transformer humming to quickly determine how something is working. Occasionally will need to see "near" while working on lines. It is constantly necessary to see "far" while driving, patrolling lines, or constructing lines, Depth perception and color vision is essential while driving.
