Whether you are interested in pursuing a research career or supporting our mission through other roles, joining NEB means contributing to meaningful scientific progress in a collaborative, campus-like environment that values both innovation and integrity. The role We are inviting applications for the position of Development Scientist I/II to join the Nucleic Acid Purification Team within the Applications and Product Development Department. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of novel nucleic acid purification products, reagents, and workflow solutions, with a particular focus on high-throughput and automation-compatible approaches. This role requires a scientist who is highly collaborative, curious, and creative in developing new protocols and workflows. They should be willing to learn from colleagues across disciplines, while also being able to work independently, troubleshoot thoughtfully, and seek input when needed. The position offers opportunities to work on strategic product development programs that support workflows relevant to clinical diagnostics, biopharma, synthetic biology, and related life science applications. Title level will be determined based on candidate experience. How you’ll contribute: Develop and characterize nucleic acid purification products, reagents, and application-focused workflows for basic research and applied markets. Design, execute, analyze, and troubleshoot experiments that contribute to new product development, optimization, and launch. Apply experience with automated liquid handling, magnetic bead-based workflows, and scaled nucleic acid extraction to support high-throughput development programs. Design experiments to interrogate how nucleic acid workflows perform across different sample types, input amounts, formats, and automation platforms, and translate those findings into robust product and workflow development. Collaborate across scientific and commercial teams to ensure products and workflows address customer needs and business priorities. Stay current with advances in nucleic acid purification, automation, synthetic biology, and applied fields, and translate relevant innovations into experimental strategies. Prepare clear presentations and content for internal and external audiences. Required Qualifications and Experience: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Biology, Bioengineering, or a related field with 2–4 years of relevant experience. Strong understanding of the role nucleic acid purification plays in life science workflows across genomics, transcriptomics, cloning, synthetic biology, and biomanufacturing. Strong experimental design, quantitative reasoning, troubleshooting, data analysis, and documentation skills. Familiarity with analytical techniques used for nucleic acid characterization, such as absorbance, fluorescence-based assays, electrophoresis, fragment analysis, qPCR, sequencing-readiness assessments, or related methods. Ability to work well as part of a team, learn from colleagues, seek help appropriately, be open to feedback, and contribute constructively to cross-functional project discussions. Ability to work independently when needed, manage multiple priorities, recognize when to escalate issues, and move work forward with limited guidance. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with sound judgment, scientific integrity, and a customer-focused mindset. What will make you stand out: Experience developing or supporting nucleic acid purification workflows in clinical diagnostics, regulated product development, or biopharma environments. Experience automating nucleic acid purification workflows on commonly used liquid handling or magnetic-particle processing platforms. Experience scaling nucleic acid extraction workflows for high-throughput formats, including optimization of reagent volumes and sample-to-sample reproducibility. Familiarity with the technical and documentation expectations associated with regulated or quality-sensitive environments. Experience translating customer, collaborator, or technical support feedback into product requirements, workflow improvements, or application data. * Submission of a cover letter is highly encouraged. Estimated base salary hiring range for this position is $87,000-$105,000 Base salary is one component of our generous total rewards compensation package. Employees are eligible to receive: Annual discretionary profit-sharing bonus Participation in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan "ESOP" (eligible after two full years of service) Exceptional benefits package at a nominal cost to the employee including a 10% 401k match Benefits at NEB Base salary decisions depend on several factors, including, but not limited to, individual qualifications, job location, internal equity, and market data alignment.
