What you'll do

  • A relevant degree, HND/HNC, apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience in engineering, computer science, simulation, games technology or built environment technology. A postgraduate qualification is not essential, and a proven ability to build and deliver working applications will carry significant weight.
  • You will also have substantial experience in several of the following:
  • Developing digital twins, engineering simulations or real-time technical applications.
  • NVIDIA Omniverse/OpenUSD or a comparable industrial digital-twin platform, and real-time 3D development in Omniverse, Unreal Engine, Unity or equivalent.
  • Working with engineering 3D data such as CAD, BIM, Revit and IFC.
  • Real-time simulation and representing system behaviour in virtual environments.
  • Programming or scripting in Python, C++, C#, visual scripting or similar.
  • Integrating external datasets, APIs and sensors into applications.
  • Automation, system states, control logic and data-driven engineering systems.
  • Working collaboratively with engineers to turn requirements into functioning technical solutions.
  • Testing, debugging and validating applications, with a structured approach to source control and documentation.
  • NVIDIA Omniverse Kit development, OpenUSD workflows and USD asset pipelines.
  • Real-time physics, BIM and digital engineering workflows, and Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD or comparable tools.
  • BMS, PLCs and industrial automation, IoT and sensor integration, and MQTT, OPC UA or other industrial protocols.
  • Building-services, renewable-energy, electrical, mechanical or civil-engineering systems, including energy monitoring and optimisation.
  • Digital or virtual commissioning, data visualisation and engineering dashboards.
  • Cloud or edge deployment, web-based or streamed real-time 3D, and virtual or augmented reality.
  • AI or machine learning applied to engineering simulation or operational data.
  • Knowledge of ISO 19650, IEC 62443 and the National Digital Twin Programme’s Gemini Principles.

What you need

  • Design and develop real-time digital twins of CETEC facilities, clean-energy technologies and engineering systems using NVIDIA Omniverse, OpenUSD or comparable industrial platforms.
  • Create simulation-ready environments from CAD, BIM, Revit, IFC, engineering drawings and point-cloud data, building workflows to convert, optimise and manage assets, and reusable components and architectures that scale across facilities.
  • Implement physics, system states, equipment behaviour and engineering logic to model normal operation, faults, failures and abnormal scenarios, allowing configurations to be tested safely and supporting virtual commissioning of equipment and control strategies.
  • Develop automation and control logic, including control sequences and closed-loop simulation, integrating PLCs, BMS, IoT and other industrial control technologies where appropriate.
  • Build interactive interfaces that let users change parameters, operate equipment and observe system responses in real time.
  • Connect digital twins to live, recorded or simulated data from sensors, IoT devices, APIs, databases and BMS, visualising energy use, temperature, pressure, flow and equipment state, and comparing simulated with real-world performance while ensuring data quality, governance and security of connected control systems in line with IEC 62443.
  • Apply digital twins across clean-energy areas including renewables, solar PV, heat pumps, heating and cooling, battery and energy storage, electrical and power systems, smart and energy-efficient buildings, energy monitoring, low-carbon engineering, sustainable construction, and civil and building-services engineering.
  • Create training and demonstration environments that let learners explore systems that are difficult, costly or unsafe to access physically, including fault-finding, maintenance and operation scenarios, with remote access via workstation, browser, streaming, VR or immersive technologies.
  • Work with engineers, lecturers, technicians and industry partners to translate requirements into working systems, validate models and outputs, and identify collaborative industry projects.
  • Evaluate emerging digital-twin, simulation, automation and physical-AI technologies, developing prototypes and proof-of-concept systems that shape CETEC’s long-term digital-engineering capability.
  • Set technical standards aligned with ISO 19650 information management, and maintain version-controlled source files, backups and change management, documenting architecture, data connections, simulation logic and asset pipelines so others can operate and maintain completed systems.
  • Education: a bachelor's degree

Job Title: Digital Twin and Simulation EngineerDepartment: PrincipalshipSalary: £45,000-£50,000Job Type: Fixed Term until 04/01/2030As our Digital Twin and Simulation Engineer, you will lead the technical development of real-time digital twins, simulation environments and automated virtual systems for CETEC. You will create accurate digital representations of our facilities, clean-energy systems, engineering equipment and building services, so they can be visualised, simulated, monitored, and tested in real time.Working closely with civil engineering, building services, the Centre of Excellence, clean-energy specialists and curriculum teams, you will combine 3D engineering data, physics, system behaviour, operational data and automation logic. Projects will range from simulation-ready virtual facilities to twins connected to live or recorded data from sensors and building management systems, built primarily on NVIDIA Omniverse and OpenUSD or comparable real-time simulation platforms.Your first priority will be to deliver CETEC’s first digital-twin demonstrator within six months. That means auditing the available engineering data, establishing the development workflow, and building an interactive simulation with live or recorded data, automation and fault scenarios. You will then demonstrate it to staff, learners and industry partners, with recommendations for scaling the capability across CETEC.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop real-time digital twins of CETEC facilities, clean-energy technologies and engineering systems using NVIDIA Omniverse, OpenUSD or comparable industrial platforms.Create simulation-ready environments from CAD, BIM, Revit, IFC, engineering drawings and point-cloud data, building workflows to convert, optimise and manage assets, and reusable components and architectures that scale across facilities.Implement physics, system states, equipment behaviour and engineering logic to model normal operation, faults, failures and abnormal scenarios, allowing configurations to be tested safely and supporting virtual commissioning of equipment and control strategies.Develop automation and control logic, including control sequences and closed-loop simulation, integrating PLCs, BMS, IoT and other industrial control technologies where appropriate.Build interactive interfaces that let users change parameters, operate equipment and observe system responses in real time.Connect digital twins to live, recorded or simulated data from sensors, IoT devices, APIs, databases and BMS, visualising energy use, temperature, pressure, flow and equipment state, and comparing simulated with real-world performance while ensuring data quality, governance and security of connected control systems in line with IEC 62443.Apply digital twins across clean-energy areas including renewables, solar PV, heat pumps, heating and cooling, battery and energy storage, electrical and power systems, smart and energy-efficient buildings, energy monitoring, low-carbon engineering, sustainable construction, and civil and building-services engineering.Create training and demonstration environments that let learners explore systems that are difficult, costly or unsafe to access physically, including fault-finding, maintenance and operation scenarios, with remote access via workstation, browser, streaming, VR or immersive technologies.Work with engineers, lecturers, technicians and industry partners to translate requirements into working systems, validate models and outputs, and identify collaborative industry projects.Evaluate emerging digital-twin, simulation, automation and physical-AI technologies, developing prototypes and proof-of-concept systems that shape CETEC’s long-term digital-engineering capability.Set technical standards aligned with ISO 19650 information management, and maintain version-controlled source files, backups and change management, documenting architecture, data connections, simulation logic and asset pipelines so others can operate and maintain completed systems.Skills, Knowledge and ExpertiseEssentialA relevant degree, HND/HNC, apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience in engineering, computer science, simulation, games technology or built environment technology.
