About INS Engineering
Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, INS Engineering is a privately held power systems engineering firm with offices in Houston and Albany, New York. We help utilities, developers, grid operators and data center teams connect new generation, energy storage and large loads to the grid, from studies through commissioning, across all major U.S. power markets.
Our work has supported projects like a 400 MW / 1 GWh battery storage facility in Texas and a 100 MW solar project in Ohio. We’re a growing, remote team that regularly gets together in person, guided by three values: Reliability, Innovation and Commitment. Our senior engineers mentor the next generation, and we stay with clients from kickoff to commissioning.
The Role INS is expanding its engineering team and is looking for an Electrical Engineer to support power system studies, modeling, grid integration and renewable energy projects. This position welcomes a range of experience levels and values strong technical fundamentals, aptitude and a drive to grow.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers on study models, simulations, reports and technical problem solving for renewable generation, data centers, storage, and transmission and interconnection projects.
What You'll Do
Analyze and model
Support power system studies including load flow, short circuit, dynamic analysis, EMT and interconnection work.
Build, validate and troubleshoot electrical network and inverter-based resource (IBR) models with guidance from senior engineers.
Interpret assumptions, simulation results, power quality and potential technical risks.
Deliver engineering work
Produce calculations, clear reports, presentations, study files and client deliverables.
Support grid integration for wind, solar PV, BESS, transmission systems and large-load facilities.
Take part in technical reviews, quality checks and issue resolution with the power studies and protection teams.
Learn and collaborate
Build expertise in advanced EMT, IBR/grid-forming and other analysis methods through mentorship.
Work effectively with distributed technical teams across multiple assignments.
Share observations and technical findings in team and client project discussions.
What You Bring
Required
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a power systems focus, or equivalent directly relevant engineering education.
A solid foundation in power system analysis, electrical machines, transmission, electrical controls or protection.
Experience with at least one power engineering modeling or analysis tool through work, internships, coursework or research.
Ability to solve quantitative problems, document assumptions and results, and communicate technical findings.
Strong technical curiosity and willingness to learn new tools, client requirements and study methods.
Nice to have
Graduate study or research in power, energy systems or a closely related field.
Academic or industry exposure to EMT, IBR, grid-forming resources, solar, wind, BESS or data centers.
Exposure to PSCAD, PSS®E, PSLF, PowerWorld, MATLAB/Simulink, ETAP or ASPEN.
Tools you'll use PSCAD, PSS®E, PSLF, PowerWorld, MATLAB/Simulink, ETAP, ASPEN or comparable (experience with all of them isn't required).
Don't check every box? If you meet most of the requirements and this role excites you, we encourage you to apply.
What Success Looks Like
First 30 days: You've set up your study tools, met your mentors and the power studies team, and shadowed senior engineers on active load flow, short circuit and interconnection studies.
60 days: You're building and checking network and IBR models and running study cases yourself, with senior engineers reviewing your work and helping you sharpen your assumptions and documentation.
90 days: You understand our study methodology, model conventions, and review and documentation standards, and you own defined calculation and modeling tasks on live projects under senior review.
6 months: You complete assigned study analyses and defensible technical deliverables with growing independence.
12 months: You reliably own defined workstreams and take on increasingly complex modeling and study problems.
Where You'll Work This is a remote role based in the United States. You'll collaborate with INS engineering and client teams across locations, with travel of up to 10%.
Life at INS We hire good people, give them the tools and support they need, and trust them to do great work, with no micromanagement. Your ideas are heard and your contributions are recognized. We work remotely and make time to reconnect in person at team gatherings, where families are welcome too. You'll work alongside experienced Ph.D. and P.E. engineers who invest in mentorship, training and knowledge-sharing, and as INS grows, there's real room to grow with the company.
Compensation Annual bonus opportunities may be available, subject to plan terms. The final offer will depend on your experience, skills and location.
