Emergency Shelter Operator

Position Title: Emergency Shelter Operator Department: Homeless Guest Services Reports To: Emergency Shelter Manager Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt, Hourly General Function: The Emergency Shelter Operator’s responsibilities include overseeing nightly & daily Homeless Guest Services activities, including check-out, breakfast, day space, check-in, showers, dinner, data entry, homeless volunteers, and community volunteers. This position provides additional administrative and operational support as needed. Supports and implements the vision and values of the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission. Job Specifics: This position will work a combination of morning/afternoon and evening shifts which will include weekends and some holidays. Position Requirements: Administrative competencies to handle homeless program logistics Displaying leadership and compassion to our guests Personable, amiable, and adaptable in a team environment Demonstrate excellent time management skills, a high level of organization, record keeping, and the desire to proactively seek out and initiate tasks Handle multiple tasks, work under pressure, and respect confidentiality in a mature and professional manner Participate in training on mental health, crisis intervention, and shelter best practices Must be able to work nights, weekends, and some holidays. Attend department meetings and check in meetings with Emergency Shelter Manager Volunteer or professional experience working with people experiencing homelessness or addiction is a plus Principal Activities: Assist with Emergency Shelter Operations Oversee day-to-day shelter operations including guest check-out, breakfast, check-in, showers, dinner, and bed assignments Maintain a safe environment within the shelter Manage guest mail Maintain staff log Orient new guests to evening processes; be available to answer questions and assist guests with completing forms Apply shelter best practices when assisting guests and responding to mental health concerns or crises Maintain photos of guests in database Maintain accurate records in computer databases and files and input accurate data Handle in-kind donations and distribution to guests Receive and respond to all Homeless Guest Services phone/email inquires Be a contributing member of the Homeless Guest Services team Meet with Homeless Guest Services team to discuss operations and guests Keep team apprised of guest issues and concerns Work collaboratively with Men’s treatment staff and security personnel to address guest concerns, disputes, and emergencies on SBRM property Assist with cleaning and maintenance of homeless guest services facility (e.g. laundry, reporting facility issues, light cleaning) Compensation and Benefits $22 - $23/hr dependent on education and experience Accrued sick and vacation time off Paid holiday time off 4% 403(b) employer match Medical, Dental, and Vision Health Insurance Effect on the End Result: This position contributes to the efficient, organized, safe, and compassionate operations of the Emergency Shelter at the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission.
