NOW HIRING: Field Service Engineer (Developing)
American Crane & Equipment Corporation · Douglassville, PA
Full-Time | On-Site | Non-Exempt | Travel: 10–20%
What This Role Really Is
This is the entry point into a career most people don't even know exists — and one of the few places that will actually invest in building you into a technical expert rather than expecting you to show up as one.
The Developing Field Service Engineer is a structured learning role. You'll work alongside experienced engineers and technicians, getting hands-on with industrial electrical systems, PLC-based controls, motor controls, and the equipment that keeps overhead cranes and hoists running safely. You're not fetching coffee — you're learning to read schematics, troubleshoot faults, and eventually teach others how to do the same.
The "Developing" in the title isn't a euphemism. It's a commitment: we're investing in your growth with structured training, mentorship, and a clear path toward increasing technical responsibility. Your job is to show up ready to learn, ask good questions, and build capability every day.
What You'll Do
Technical Learning & Development
Participate in structured training covering industrial electrical fundamentals, PLC systems, motor controls, and equipment troubleshooting
Develop knowledge of AC/DC circuits, electrical components, motor starters, contactors, overloads, and variable frequency drives
Learn to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts
Build familiarity with PLC inputs, outputs, operating logic, and basic troubleshooting principles
Study ACECO equipment, proprietary systems, and applicable technical documentation
Apply technical knowledge through supervised practical exercises and demonstrations
Technical Training Support
Assist experienced technical personnel with preparing and delivering technician training
Help develop presentations, lesson materials, training exercises, checklists, and technical reference documents
Prepare training equipment, instructional materials, and demonstration setups
Progressively develop the ability to explain technical concepts to individuals and small groups
Collect feedback and help identify opportunities to improve instructional materials
Electrical Safety & Qualification Development
Complete required electrical safety training — NFPA 70E principles, lockout/tagout, and applicable PPE requirements
Learn to recognize electrical hazards and apply approved safe-work procedures
Develop competency in the safe use of electrical test equipment
Progress toward electrical safety qualifications appropriate to assigned responsibilities
Perform electrical testing or work only within documented qualifications, authorization, and required supervision
Training Documentation & Administrative Support
Assist with maintaining technician training records, attendance documentation, qualification tracking, and assessment results
Update training spreadsheets, schedules, checklists, and reference materials
Use Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and applicable company systems to organize training information
Support improvements to training documentation and recordkeeping processes
Technical & Field Support
Observe experienced technicians and engineers during troubleshooting, equipment inspections, and technical demonstrations
Develop practical familiarity with industrial control panels, electrical components, and equipment operation
Learn troubleshooting methods through supervised observation, testing, and guided problem-solving
Participate in field visits and customer-site activities as assigned
Maintain accurate notes and communicate technical observations to experienced personnel
Who Thrives Here
This role is designed for someone at the beginning of their technical career who has the foundation and the hunger to build something real. You don't need to know everything — you need to be the kind of person who hates not knowing.
You'll do well here if you:
Graduated with a technical degree or completed a trade program and want to apply it in an industrial environment
Learn best by doing — you'd rather have a multimeter in your hand than a textbook on your desk
Ask "why" instead of just following steps, because you want to understand the system, not just the procedure
Take feedback well and treat every correction as a shortcut to getting better
Have the patience to build skills methodically and the ambition to eventually lead training for others
This probably isn't the right fit if:
You want full autonomy on day one — this role has structured supervision by design
You're looking for a purely desk-based engineering job
You're not comfortable working around live electrical equipment, industrial machinery, or on job sites
What We're Looking For
Required
High school diploma or GED
Foundational knowledge of electrical systems gained through education, technical training, internships, apprenticeships, or practical experience
Understanding of basic electrical fundamentals — AC/DC circuits, Ohm's law, and basic motor-control principles
Ability to read and interpret basic electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
Willingness and ability to learn PLC-based controls, motor-control systems, and industrial troubleshooting methods
Ability to explain foundational technical concepts clearly
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Valid driver's license
Preferred
Associate's or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electromechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline
Completion of a trade school, technical school, apprenticeship, or military technical training program in electrical, electronics, or industrial automation
Internship, co-op, or work experience involving industrial electrical systems, controls, or maintenance
Exposure to PLCs, VFDs, servo drives, or industrial automation through coursework or practical experience
Experience tutoring, mentoring, presenting, or explaining technical subjects
