Turner Staffing Group is recruiting a Geotechnical Engineer on behalf of our client, a mining operation near Elko, Nevada. This is a direct-hire position with our client. The Opportunity This is a growth-focused role for an early- to mid-career engineer who wants to build a career in mining geotechnical engineering. You’ll evaluate soil, rock, groundwater, and geologic conditions to support the safe design, construction, and operation of mine workings and infrastructure, including pit slopes, underground excavations, tailings storage facilities, waste dumps, and haul roads. You’ll work alongside experienced geotechnical staff and with mine planning, geology, operations, environmental, and civil engineering teams, with mentoring and training available as you develop. Responsibilities Support geotechnical investigations, including drilling programs, rock and soil sampling, laboratory testing, and field mapping. Analyze rock mass behavior, slope stability, ground support requirements, and soil mechanics. Help develop geotechnical models for open-pit and underground operations. Run stability analyses and numerical models, including FLAC3D, under the guidance of senior engineers. Assist with stope sequencing, mine design optimization, and excavation stability assessments. Contribute to the design and evaluation of stope dimensions and dilution/ELOS estimates, underground ground support systems, pit slopes and bench configurations, waste rock dumps, and tailings storage facilities. Support Ground Control Management Plans (GCMPs), TARPs, and geotechnical risk management processes. Monitor ground conditions and interpret instrumentation data from prisms, piezometers, MPBX/extensometers, and radar systems. Identify geotechnical hazards such as slope failures, rockfalls, subsidence, and seismic activity, and help develop mitigation plans. Perform field inspections and prepare stability assessments, risk assessments, and technical reports. Provide day-to-day geotechnical support to operations and help develop practical, implementable solutions. Support drill-and-blast optimization from a geotechnical perspective. Participate in mine planning and scheduling meetings. Assist with permitting and regulatory submissions and help ensure compliance with mining regulations, environmental standards, and safety policies. Coordinate with geologists, mine engineers, surveyors, environmental specialists, contractors, and consultants. Present findings and recommendations to the site team and management. The above responsibilities are representative and may not include all assigned duties. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Rock Mechanics preferred. 0–5 years of geotechnical, mining, or related engineering experience; recent graduates with relevant internships, co-ops, or research are encouraged to apply. Working knowledge of rock mechanics and soil mechanics through coursework or field experience. Exposure to slope stability analysis, ground support design, data interpretation, and technical reporting. Familiarity with geotechnical and mine design software such as Rocscience (Unwedge, Dips), GeoStudio, Surpac, Vulcan, AutoCAD, or GIS platforms. Experience with FLAC3D or other advanced numerical modeling is a plus but not required; training and mentoring will be provided. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship.
