Who We Are
The City of Katy is a close-knit, growing community where local government makes a real difference in people's everyday lives. Our Human Resources team sits at the center of it all - supporting the people who keep Katy running, from public safety to parks to city hall. We work hard, look out for each other, and take pride in doing things right.
The Opportunity
We're looking for an HR Coordinator who is organized, people-oriented, and ready to contribute across a broad range of HR functions. This role works closely within the HR team, providing meaningful support that keeps the department moving - from recruitment logistics and onboarding to benefits assistance and employee programs.
This isn't a purely transactional role. You'll be working within a small, collaborative team where your contributions have real impact, and where you'll build skills across every area of human resources. If you're someone who enjoys variety, takes initiative, and wants to grow in the HR profession, this is a great place to do it.
What You'll Do
No two days look exactly the same. You'll work within a collaborative HR team, contributing support across a wide range of programs and processes. Here's a look at where you'll contribute:
Assist with the recruitment process - helping post positions, coordinate interviews, conduct background checks, and keep candidate documentation organized
Support new hire onboarding by preparing paperwork, coordinating logistics, and helping new employees get off to a strong start
Help employees navigate HR questions and processes, connecting them with the right resources and information
Maintain accurate employee personnel and benefit files - this role involves a meaningful amount of data entry, filing, and recordkeeping, and getting it right matters
Support HRIS data entry, audits, and routine reporting to keep employee information accurate and up to date
Provide support during annual benefits open enrollment, including communications, scheduling, and documentation
Assist with benefits orientation for new hires and ensure enrollment records are complete and processed accurately
Help coordinate the employee recognition program, wellness initiatives, and department events
Support training program logistics and assist with policy communication as needed
Assist with completing employment verifications, surveys, and open records requests
Pitch in wherever the team needs you - this is a department that works together
What We're Looking For
Detail, discretion, and a collaborative spirit - that's what this role calls for. Here's what we're hoping you bring:
An Associate's Degree in HR, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field, plus at least two years of HR or related experience - or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office - we're looking for someone who really knows their way around Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, not just the basics
A natural comfort with technology - someone who picks up new tools quickly and can help the team work smarter
Experience creating employee-facing materials like flyers, announcements, and presentations - familiarity with Canva or similar tools is a plus
Experience with or willingness to learn HRIS systems
Strong communication skills and a professional, courteous approach in every interaction
The ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and sound judgment
A knack for managing multiple tasks and priorities without losing the details
A genuinely collaborative working style - you share information freely, ask for help when you need it, and make the people around you better at their jobs
Nice to Have
SHRM-CP or PHR certification (or interest in pursuing one - we support professional development)
Experience in a municipal or government HR setting
