Step into a career with ASM, where cutting edge technology meets collaborative culture. For over 55 years ASM has been ahead of what’s next, at the forefront of innovation and what’s technologically possible. With more than 4,500 ASMers representing 70 nationalities, our people and our advanced semiconductor devices are playing a crucial role in trends such as 5G, cloud computing, AI, and autonomous driving. But we’re more than just a tech company. We value diversity, inclusion and sustainability as we strive to make a positive impact on the world. Our development programs help support your growth, shaping your future and pushing the boundaries of innovation to unleash potential. We are seeking a motivated Hardware Engineer Intern, Mechanical, to join our engineering team and gain hands-on experience supporting the design, integration, testing, and continuous improvement of electrical hardware used in advanced semiconductor equipment. As an intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers to learn how complex semiconductor equipment is designed, built, tested, and qualified. You’ll contribute to real engineering projects involving electrical systems such as power distribution, controls, sensors, interlocks, safety circuits, cable assemblies, and system-level interfaces. Throughout the internship, you’ll have a defined technical project with clear objectives and deliverables, receive mentorship and technical guidance, participate in hands-on engineering activities, and present your project and key learnings at the conclusion of the internship. What You Will Be Working On Support engineering projects related to the design, development, testing, and improvement of semiconductor equipment. Apply mechanical engineering principles, product requirements, and experimental data to support engineering design decisions. Assist with engineering calculations and analysis, including structural, thermal, and fluid dynamics. Create and update 3D CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using Creo Parametric or similar tools. Participate in prototype builds, testing, data collection, and evaluation of mechanical designs. Support troubleshooting and root-cause investigations for technical or mechanical challenges. Gain exposure to complex mechanical systems such as reactors, vacuum chambers, gas delivery systems, pneumatics, cooling circuits, and vacuum systems. Learn how materials, manufacturing methods, tolerances, coatings, and surface finishes influence semiconductor equipment design. Support engineering documentation for prototype builds, manufacturing, testing, and design reviews. Collaborate with Electrical process, electrical, manufacturing, sourcing, and other engineering teams. Gain exposure to manufacturing and fabrication methods such as CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and coatings. Participate in design reviews, technical discussions, and engineering problem-solving sessions. Complete a defined internship project and present your work, findings, and recommendations at the conclusion of the internship. What We Are Looking For Currently pursuing a Master’s, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline. Strong interest in mechanical design, semiconductor equipment, advanced manufacturing, or product development. Coursework, academic research, laboratory experience, or student projects involving mechanical design and analysis. Basic understanding of engineering concepts such as mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and materials. Experience with or exposure to 3D CAD software such as Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar tools. Ability to analyze engineering problems, interpret data, and contribute to technical solutions. Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn through hands-on engineering work. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional and diverse engineering teams. Ability to manage internship project priorities while contributing in a fast-paced engineering environment. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Creo Parametric and/or AutoCAD. Coursework, research, or project experience involving complex mechanical systems, thermal systems, fluid systems, vacuum systems, or precision equipment. Exposure to semiconductor deposition technologies such as Epitaxy, CVD, ALD, or PVD. Cleanroom, laboratory, research, prototype assembly, or hands-on testing experience. Familiarity with CNC machining, sheet metal, welding, coatings, or other manufacturing processes. Understanding of engineering materials, including metals, plastics, coatings, and surface finishes. Exposure to GD&T and ASME Y14.5 principles. Experience with engineering analysis, simulation, statistical methods, or model-based problem solving. What You’ll Gain Hands-on experience working with advanced semiconductor equipment and Epitaxy technology. Exposure to the complete engineering lifecycle, from early design and analysis through prototype development and testing. Practical experience with CAD, mechanical analysis, engineering drawings, testing, and problem solving. An understanding of how mechanical engineering supports semiconductor manufacturing technology. Mentorship and technical guidance from experienced engineers. Experience collaborating across mechanical, process, electrical, manufacturing, and other engineering disciplines. A meaningful technical project with the opportunity to present your results and accomplishments at the end of the internship. Internship Eligibility This position is specifically designed as a student internship. Candidates should be actively pursuing a Master’s, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline and meet applicable internship eligibility requirements. Apply today to be part of what’s next. We make the tech that enables the chips in devices which improve lives around the world. We do this with an eye to the future, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible through cutting-edge innovation, and driving the next wave of technological breakthroughs that shape how we live, work, and connect.
