What we are looking for
We're searching for Summer 2027 Safety & Systems Engineering Interns. You'll work on the systems and safety engineering that holds a safety-critical driving product to its requirements — functional safety, behavioral and system safety, systems-engineering process, and requirements/fault analysis for the Aurora Driver.
In this role you will
Perform safety analysis to identify root causes and common-cause failures across vehicle, system, or software subsystems
Build tooling to support safety-analysis or requirements-development processes
Analyze test coverage and data to determine whether the system meets its safety and behavioral requirements
Explore external and internal data sources to identify previously unknown scenarios or system sensitivities
Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to engineering stakeholders
Required qualifications
Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in Systems Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
Some exposure to a system where failure had real consequences, even at the coursework or club-project level
Familiarity with structured failure-analysis methods (FMEA, fault trees, STPA, or other formal root-cause methods)
Regular use of Python for analysis or tooling
Experience running an analysis as part of a trade study
Ability to reason about evidence and statistics — coverage and confidence, not just pass/fail counts
Desirable qualifications
Prior safety-engineering experience (functional safety, ISO 26262-class standards)
C++ experience
Experience with UML/SysML
