The Staff Research Associate will assist the principal investigator with daily laboratory operations, including mouse colony maintenance and various biochemical experiments. They will perform molecular biology techniques, tissue culture, and data analysis to investigate hypoxia adaptation and cardiovascular disease mechanisms.
Requirements overview
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in a related science field and possess experience with mouse handling, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Strong organizational skills and the ability to perform basic bioinformatics programming are also required.
The Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at UC San Francisco is a pioneering leader in providing outstanding, state of the art healthcare that is equitable and inclusive. In alignment with the wider UCSF mission to advance health worldwide, we are committed to optimizing perioperative outcomes, training the next generation of anesthesiology leaders, and translating discoveries to benefit the health and life of our patients and the wide range of communities we serve.
Consistently ranked in the top ten nationally in NIH-funded research, important discoveries by our department include the first use of CPAP in premature infants, key contributions to the pharmacology of muscle relaxants and inhaled anesthetics, first demonstration of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography, and many others [https://anesthesia.ucsf.edu/anesthesia-timeline-fullscreen]. We have robust research programs, spanning the range from ion channel structure and function, to clinical and translational research [https://anesthesia.ucsf.edu/welcome-ucsf-anesthesia-research].
Our trainees have become leaders across the country. We are particularly proud of our residency program [https://anesthesia.ucsf.edu/education-program-ucsf-department-anesthesia], which provides unequaled diversity of experience in a major university medical center (UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights), the San Francisco Veterans Hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Mount Zion Hospital, the UCSF Orthopaedic Institute, and the UCSF Benioff Children's, Betty Irene Moore Women's and Bakar Cancer (NIH-designated Cancer Center) Hospitals in the Mission Bay neighborhood. We offer ACGME fellowships in Critical Care Medicine, Pain Medicine, Cardiac Anesthesia, Obstetric Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, Acute Pain and Regional Anesthesia, and many additional non-ACGME fellowships. Our faculty are dedicated to teaching, nurturing, and mentoring the next generation of leaders.
The Staff Research Associate (SRA) assists the principal investigator (PI) with
active experiments and the daily tasks related to the operation of a biomedical
research laboratory. This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in
graduate school in the biomedical sciences.
Our research is primarily focused on: 1) chronic hypoxia sensing and adaptation,
2) mechanisms of pericarditis, and 3) lipid metabolism in hypoxia. We seek to
understand how cells, tissues, and organisms respond and adapt to chronic
hypoxia at the molecular and whole-body physiology levels. We utilize a variety
of in vitro (cell) models and mouse models to investigate specific transcription
factors, gene and protein regulatory pathways, and metabolic changes in
mediating responses under hypoxia. This work lies at the intersection of hypoxia
signaling, lipid metabolism, and cardiovascular disease. We have developed
models of cardiovascular disease that are affected by chronic hypoxia, including
pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and obesity. We use various biochemical
assays, “multi-omics,” and computational approaches to carefully dissect
mechanisms of hypoxia adaptation and lipid rewiring in hypoxia. In addition, we
are interested in dissecting mechanisms of recurrent pericarditis, using mouse
models of pericarditis and patient samples.
The SRA will have many duties relevant to these goals and it is expected that
they will become increasing independent over time. It is expected that the SRA
will become well-versed in multiple molecular and biochemical techniques to
analyze tissues and cells, such as western blotting, qPCR, single nuclear RNA
sequencing, and generation of DNA constructs. They will also assist with various
mouse model experiments and take an active role in mouse colony maintenance and
lab organization and lab management.
