Utilities Operations Apprentice

POSITION SUMMARY  The SPR/Utilities Operations Apprentice is a year-long program that includes a comprehensive training program at SPR and the Allen Water Treatment Plant.  Apprentices will spend 6 months at SPR and 6 months with utilities.   REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Reports to: Manager, Operations and Maintenance  Direct Reports:  None   DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Apprentices are expected to arrive for their shift ready to learn and communicate any schedule conflicts with their assigned supervisor in advance when possible.  Apprentices will learn under the mentorship of licensed operators and will help keep track of the progress of their learning objectives as defined in the training calendar and apprenticeship program.   KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES ORGANIZATION WIDE – EVERY EMPLOYEE IS ACCOUNTABLE TO: * Aligning and demonstrating Englewood Utilities organizational vision, mission, and values. * Follow the Safety Program – policies, required trainings, and overall engagement. * Uphold fiscal responsibility through procurement policy and procedures. * Continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the service or product being delivered. * Value diversity; demonstrate an awareness of differences; demonstrate sensitivity and adapt behaviors and communication to accommodate these differences. JOB SPECIFIC – EVERY EMPLOYEE IN THIS POSITION MUST BE ABLE TO: Technical Expertise – Plant Operations: Basic knowledge of principles of the Water Treatment Plant Operations discipline.  * Readily learn and adopt new skills and technologies that can improve water treatment plant operations and maintenance activities. * Understands chemical and mechanical treatment technologies, their principles of operation and application in specific tasks or processes. * Possesses troubleshooting competency to evaluate, diagnose and repair operational issues throughout the plant site. Nimble Learning: Actively learning through experimentation when tackling new problems, using both successes and failures as learning fodder.  * Self-directed learner: readily applies knowledge gained from experience to new situations. * Willing to accept and incorporate feedback; actively seeks out feedback from others where appropriate. * Follow instructions and learn from mistakes.  Problem Solving: Generating, evaluating and implementing solutions to operational problems.  * Applies known solutions to existing and novel problems; demonstrates situational awareness. * Use data available to help solve problems. * Capable of contributing to multifunctional problem-solving efforts, communicating complex problems and working towards solutions involving multiple workgroups.  Models Accountability: Holding self and others accountable to meet commitments.  * Completes assigned work on time without need for rework. * Takes responsibility for actions, models integrity * Takes initiative; is proactive in completing work without need for specific direction on each task   MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, AND WORK EXPERIENCE: * High School Diploma or equivalent * Clean Driving Record * By the 6-month mark, apprentices are required to achieve either a D Water or D Wastewater license in order to continue their apprenticeship. *An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS    In addition to above requirements: new hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes:  in-person interviews, reference checks, and background checks, which may include local police check, DMV check, drug screen, and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.    WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Requires extensive sitting, walking, carrying, lifting, kneeling, bending, reaching, and squatting. May be required to lift up to 75 pounds. Major activities are performed on level, slippery, sloping, unstable and uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions. May be exposed to extreme cold, heat, heights, temperature swings, constant noise, mechanical and electrical hazards, fumes, odors, & chemicals. Work is performed in an office, outside, and in an industrial environment.   HOURLY RATE $17.47 - $26.21/Hourly Rate This is a seasonal position unless a full-time opportunity is offered at a later date.    APPLICATION DEADLINE Open until filled.
