Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join our Power Delivery Design Phase (Pre-Construction) team. This role owns the electrical scope of a project from initial customer contact through hand-off to the Operations Electrical team - spanning proposals, estimating, contracting, and design coordination. Hiring level is determined based on experience; all team members work across the full breadth of the pre-construction process rather than in narrow specialty lanes.
This is a high-visibility, single-point-of-contact role working directly with customers, Precon Managers, trade partners, suppliers, legal, and senior leadership across a roughly 18-month pre-construction lifecycle.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the electrical single point of contact in support of projects in Design Phase
Take a defined scope of work and engage external trade partners to solicit and evaluate bids
Engage and lead customers through conceptual plans and layouts to finalize Scopes of Work
Create and manage project schedules and key milestones, hold team members accountable for reaching set milestones
Assist in regulatory approval and permitting process
Participate in design meetings - contribute to design plans, offer technical advice, and help shape the overall project approach to align with commercially viable solutions
Coordinate with buyers and supply chain to ensure material/equipment plans are aligned with project needs
Assist with project proposal development
Prepare bid packages and contract manuals for subcontractors and suppliers in conjunction with project planning team
Handle sequencing considerations, land constraints, stormwater requirements, and other site-specific planning factors during design
Support system level studies (short circuit, reactive power and load flow, harmonics, TOV, TRV, etc)
Review drawings for constructability, accuracy, and known code compliance
Collaborate with the electrical Operations team (support transition/handoff, testing, commissioning) to ensure design decisions carry through cleanly into the field
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
Minimum 2+ years of relevant substation electrical experience in the utility, transmission, or renewable energy space
High voltage experience - 34.5kV to 500kV

Strong communication and negotiation skills - this role regularly interfaces with customers, land owners, legal, and senior leadership
Ability to balance multiple concurrent workstreams across a long (approximately 18-month) pre-construction cycle
Location or ability to relocate to the greater Twin Cities area
The base pay range for this role is $80,900 - $109,300 (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).
