 Carpentry and Shop Fabrication
Build the jigs, carts, workstations and shipping crates that keep manufacturing on pace. Work alongside operators and Manufacturing Engineering to identify what slows a station down, build a practical solution and verify that it helps the crew complete its work within takt time.
Responsibilities
Observe work at the station. Ask operators where they lose time walking for parts, measuring the same feature, repositioning components or waiting for tools.
Measure parts and work areas, read drawings and sketches, prepare cut lists, and select suitable materials, fasteners and hardware.
Build and repair assembly jigs, drill templates, fixtures, benches and tool boards. Check fit, alignment and repeatability against the drawing using a representative part.
Build line-side kit carts, mobile racks and component cradles that present parts in build order. Fabricate crates, skids, blocking and bracing to approved packing specifications.
Use saws, drills, routers, clamps and measuring tools safely. Fit and adjust casters, hinges, latches and other hardware. Follow approved designs and obtain engineering review for load-bearing equipment before use.
Trial each build with operators, compare setup or handling time before and after, and adjust the design based on what the crew observes. Record final dimensions and materials so other lines can reproduce it.
Required skills
Strong hands-on carpentry skills, including accurate layout, cutting, joinery, fastening and assembly. Able to build a square, repeatable fixture from a dimensioned sketch.
Broad practical repair and fabrication skills. Able to diagnose a poor fit, worn hardware or damaged joint and make a durable repair.
Ability to work independently, coordinate priorities with production leads and explain safe setup and use to operators.
5S. Set up and maintain labeled locations for tools and materials so operators can see what belongs at each station and what is missing.
Standard work. Follow the agreed work sequence and document how to set up, use and reset each jig or cart with the operators who use it.
Parts presentation. Stage the correct parts and quantities at the point of use, in build order and within safe reach. Make shortages visible before the next build.
Preferred experience
Production shop, cabinetmaking, skilled trade or industrial maintenance experience is preferred. Other valued skills include forklift and overhead crane operation, welding frames and brackets to approved drawings, and using AutoCAD to produce dimensioned shop drawings.
