Contract: Cargo Mission Contract (CMC)
Department: Sustaining Engineering
Timeframe: November 2026 through May 2027
Part-time, 20-30 hours
The Cargo Mission Contract program managers, engineers, and staff members provide cargo mission engineering and integration services for NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) Program and Artemis campaign. For more than two decades, the team has carefully prepared cargo to withstand both the intense forces of a rocket launch and the microgravity of orbit to sustain human presence in space.
Assignments completed by the team include developing, fabricating, and certifying hardware to support mission objectives. The team works to implement the space station and Artemis manifest requirements for launch, return, and disposal, as well as support logistical and integration functions to maintain adequate crew provisions and supplies to sustain human presence in space.
Most of the work associated with this internship is directly applicable to the International Space Station.
Primary responsibilities include:
Support engineers in the certification process of hardware for the International Space Station (ISS). The tasks include a multi‑phase, multi‑review process that ensures the item is safe, reliable, and compliant with NASA’s rigorous standards before it is delivered to astronauts. Key categories of ISS hardware include basic laboratory equipment, advanced research systems, environmental and life support hardware, robotics systems, data and communication networks and power systems.
Attend various engineering planning meetings and be responsible for documenting discussions and action plans.
Assist management by completing work orders, processing non-conformances documents, developing draft estimates and work schedules, managing procurement documents, and making draft charts for presentations.
Assist in updating statuses as work progresses including completing testing procedures. Other tasks include: comparing planned vs. actual dates, flagging delays, and helping coordinate follow‑ups so engineers can focus on technical work while the intern keeps the schedule up to date and visible.
Course of study desired: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
