The new UNM Grand Challenges Biodiversity Nexus team seeks an enthusiastic and quantitative scientist with interest in past, present, and future biodiversity and experience with natural history collections. The successful applicant will work with a transdisciplinary group of scientists to tackle important questions such as how environmental change reshapes biodiversity, ecosystem function, and human health through time, and how UNM’s collections may be leveraged as scientific infrastructure to predict and effectively respond to such changes? Research falls under four themes: biodiversity response to environmental change; biosphere cycling of human materials; multi-temporal history of disease transmission; and Earth system succession and planetary tipping.
The successful applicant will work directly with one or more of the co-conveners of Biodiversity Nexus: Drs. Felisa Smith, Cori Myers, Jason Moore, and Mike Andersen to identify and mobilize UNM collections relevant to their projects and contribute to the development of extramurally funded grant proposals emerging from the Biodiversity Nexus network.
Biodiversity Nexus Vision statement: A future in which UNM's extraordinary natural history collections serve as living scientific infrastructure for New Mexico and beyond, connecting researchers, communities, and policymakers across disciplines and timescales to understand and respond to environmental change.
