The Youth Shelter Care Staff provides direct supervision and trauma-informed support to participants while assisting with daily living skills and shelter operations. They are responsible for maintaining facility safety, responding to crises, and documenting participant progress to ensure continuity of care.
Requirements overview

Youth Shelter Care Staff
This posting will be open through Friday, October 16, 2026 at 4pm MST.
Status: Full time; 40 hours per week; Non-Exempt
Pay Range: $21-22/hour
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Youth Shelter Care Staff provides direct supervision and delivers trauma-informed, relationship-based support while assisting participants in building daily living skills that promote long-term stability. Through consistent engagement, crisis response, and reinforcement of program expectations, staff strengthen safety, accountability, and personal growth. In collaboration with participants and the broader TMH care team, this position helps foster stability and advances The Matthews House’s commitment to making homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED is required. First aid/CPR and QMAP certifications are required. An associates degree in Psychology, human services, or a similar field is preferred.
1+ year of experience in human services is required. 2+ years of experience working in shelters or working with youth is preferred.
Must be able to transport and have a clean driving record.
Must pass a CBI/FBI fingerprint screening and drug test.
Knowledge of local community and resources preferred.
Bilingual/bicultural Spanish speaker is preferred but not required.
Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities:
Shelter Operations & Basic Needs Support – 40%
Support daily shelter operations by executing check-ins, room assignments, meal and snack distribution, laundry and hygiene access, and maintaining clean, organized common spaces.
Help ensure participants’ basic needs are met in a respectful, youth-centered manner.
Safety, Supervision & Crisis Response – 25%
Provide consistent supervision of participants, monitor facility safety, and follow de-escalation and incident response protocols.
Support crisis response in coordination with supervisors and partners as needed.
Participant Engagement & Routine Building – 15%
Build positive, strengths-based relationships with youth and young adults.
Support daily routines, life skills activities, and community-building within the shelter.
Encourage participation in case management, education, and housing services.
Documentation & Shift Communication – 10%
Complete basic documentation, shelter logs, and shift handoffs.
Communicate observations, concerns, and follow-ups to supervisors and case management teams to support continuity of care.
Team & Program Support – 10%
Support teammates with tasks and supervision of youth.
Participate in required training and team meetings when scheduled.
Assist with other duties as assigned.
SCHEDULE:
Schedule will need to have some flexibility, to float to different shifts for coverage
Services will be provided in The Landing.
