The Staff Research Associate will conduct leukemia research using mouse models and cell lines, including performing biochemical assays and genetic analysis. Responsibilities also include the maintenance of mouse colonies and performing experimental procedures such as injections and tissue harvesting.
Requirements overview
A Bachelor's degree in a related science or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Preferred qualifications include expertise in laboratory mouse maintenance, molecular biology techniques, and tissue culture skills.
The Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at UC San Francisco is a pioneering leader in providing outstanding, state of the art healthcare that is equitable and inclusive. In alignment with the wider UCSF mission to advance health worldwide, we are committed to optimizing perioperative outcomes, training the next generation of anesthesiology leaders, and translating discoveries to benefit the health and life of our patients and the wide range of communities we serve.
Consistently ranked in the top ten nationally in NIH-funded research, important discoveries by our department include the first use of CPAP in premature infants, key contributions to the pharmacology of muscle relaxants and inhaled anesthetics, first demonstration of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography, and many others [https://anesthesia.ucsf.edu/anesthesia-timeline-fullscreen]. We have robust research programs, spanning the range from ion channel structure and function, to clinical and translational research [https://anesthesia.ucsf.edu/welcome-ucsf-anesthesia-research].
Our trainees have become leaders across the country. We are particularly proud of our residency program [https://anesthesia.ucsf.edu/education-program-ucsf-department-anesthesia], which provides unequaled diversity of experience in a major university medical center (UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights), the San Francisco Veterans Hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Mount Zion Hospital, the UCSF Orthopaedic Institute, and the UCSF Benioff Children's, Betty Irene Moore Women's and Bakar Cancer (NIH-designated Cancer Center) Hospitals in the Mission Bay neighborhood. We offer ACGME fellowships in Critical Care Medicine, Pain Medicine, Cardiac Anesthesia, Obstetric Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, Acute Pain and Regional Anesthesia, and many additional non-ACGME fellowships. Our faculty are dedicated to teaching, nurturing, and mentoring the next generation of leaders.
The Huang Lab at UCSF (https://huanglabucsf.com/
[https://huanglabucsf.com/]) investigates the genetics and biology of leukemia
through the use of relevant mouse and cell line models. Specific goals include:
(1) to determine the biochemical mechanisms governing growth, survival and
differentiation of leukemia cells; (2) to identify genes and biochemical
pathways that are regulated differentially in leukemia versus normal cells; (3)
to measure the growth of distinct populations of normal and leukemia bone marrow
cells in vivo and in vitro; (4) to harvest murine bone marrow and embryonic
fetal livers for transplantation into irradiated recipients; (5) to transplant
genetically modified hematopoietic cells into recipient mice; (6) to perform
genetic analysis on mouse tissues; and, (7) to administer chemotherapeutic
agents, radiation, and new experimental treatments to mice.
This Staff Research Associate (SRA) position is for an individual who will
conduct leukemia research using mouse models and cell lines. SRA duties will
include: cell/tissue culture, biochemical assays (western blotting,
immunoprecipitation, qPCR), DNA and RNA extraction and manipulation, PCR and
agarose gel electrophoresis, generation of recombinant retroviruses/lentiviruses
and transduction of hematopoietic cells, flow cytometry, maintenance of accurate
and complete records, organization and maintenance of mouse colonies (including
computerized record-keeping, breeding, monitoring and genotyping), and
experimental procedures using laboratory mice (blood sampling,
intravenous/intraperitoneal injection, dissection, analysis of harvested
tissues).
